Each off-season, there are always a number of players who have had their contracts expire. These players become free agents and, as such, are available to accept contract offers being made by other GMs in the league as well as receiving tags.
The types of tags included:
* Franchise Tag- A player with an expired contract can be franchise tagged by their original owner which allows the original owner to retain the player with their real life contract (RLC). Franchise tags and RLCs do not recognize option years. Each GM receives 1 per year.
* Restricted Tag- Allows the original owner to designate the player with the expired contract as a restricted free agent. Each GM receives 2 per year.
* Amnesty Tag- This allows a GM to drop a player during the offseason and only owe 25% of the remaining contract as opposed to 50%. Each GM receives 1 per year.
***These tags are tradable but a GM can only receive ONE of each tag extra per season.
DETERMINING SERVICE TIME:
An ML qualifying season is one in which the player 1.) has had 150 at-bats for a non-pitcher or 2.) started more than 10 games for a starting pitcher or 3.) pitched more than 40 innings for a non-starting pitcher. In the event a team has a pitcher that has both started and relieved, the "more than 40 innings" limitation would apply.
PROSPECT ELIGIBILITY:
A prospect is a player who has not accrued 3 ML qualifying seasons. You may keep a prospect for 3 seasons after he completes his first ML qualified season (as stated in rules above) at the salary of $300,000 for year 1, $500,000 for year 2, and $1,000,000 in year 3. After the 3 prospect protected years, the players will enter arbitration. Arbitration will work as such:
*Once a player reaches the majors and exceeds the eligible AB/IP limits, they will be given a set salary for their first three years:
1st year - $300,000
2nd year - $500,000
3rd year - $1,000,000
*The player will be considered in their first season following the year in which they exceed the minor league limits.
****The value of the player contract in years 4, 5, and 6 will be determined by a performance scale, using the 3rd year total as the base ($1m). This will be considered their "arbitration years."
*In the 4th year, the owner will be responsible for 50% of the calculation.
*In the 5th year, the owner will be responsible for 75% of the calculation.
*In the 6th year, the owner will be responsible for 100% of the calculation.
